AI engineer recruitment agency in the Netherlands: how to choose, salaries and fees

A good AI engineer recruitment agency can explain which kind of AI engineer you need, tests for production experience and names a salary band with a source up front. With salary bands from our own 2026 vacancies, what our own AI hiring data shows, the questions to ask and what it costs.
Short answer
A good AI engineer recruitment agency in the Netherlands does three things: it explains which kind of AI engineer you need, it tests candidates on work that actually runs in production, and it gives you a realistic salary band with a source before the search starts. Choose on proven knowledge of the role, not on the word AI on a website. Chase IT Recruitment is a recruitment agency specialised in software and AI engineers in the Netherlands, for permanent roles only. Below you will find what a specialist agency does, how the main AI roles differ, salary bands from our own 2026 vacancies, the questions to ask and what it costs.
New to hiring in the Netherlands? Notice periods, language, location and the usual fee models are in our guide to tech recruitment agencies in the Netherlands. This article is about AI roles only.
What a specialist AI recruitment agency does
Search for "AI recruitment agency" and you get two kinds of results. Some agencies use AI to recruit: automated CV screening, scored video interviews, keyword matching. Others recruit the people who build AI. If you need engineers, ask which of the two you are talking to.
A specialist agency for AI engineers should do four things a generalist often cannot:
- Sharpen the role. AI engineer, ML engineer and data scientist are different jobs with different pools and salaries.
- Know the titles. In 50 AI profiles from our own candidate pool we counted 43 different job titles (details in Dutch). Searching on one title finds only a small part of them.
- Reach people who are not looking. Good AI engineers rarely apply. An agency needs its own network, not job boards.
- Test production experience. Users, monitoring, evaluation of output and what went wrong. Not a list of tools.
Language is less of a barrier than many international employers expect. About three quarters of genuine AI vacancies in the Netherlands are written in English, and most are in the province of North Holland (CBS AI monitor 2024). Outside the Randstad you are fishing in a smaller pool.
AI engineer, ML engineer or data scientist?
| Role | What the person does | What to test for |
|---|---|---|
| AI engineer | Builds applications with language models (RAG, agents, document processing) and connects them to existing software | Production experience, evaluation of output, cost per user |
| Machine learning engineer | Trains, deploys and maintains own models, including pipelines and monitoring (MLOps) | Models that are live, data pipelines, retraining |
| Data scientist | Explores data, builds and tests models, advises the business | Statistics, experiments, translating results into decisions |
An agency that mixes these up sends you CVs that fit on paper and fail in the technical interview. We saw exactly that in our own data: a strong candidate withdrew because the role turned out to be mostly data engineering and cloud migration, while he wanted modelling and research. That should have come out in the intake.
Salary bands from our own 2026 vacancies
From the AI vacancies we worked on in 2026, gross per year, including the 8 percent holiday allowance:
| Profile | Band |
|---|---|
| AI software engineer, medior | about €58,000 to €84,000 |
| AI or machine learning engineer, medior to senior | up to about €87,000 |
| Senior AI engineer | €85,000 to €120,000 |
| AI lead | up to about €111,000 |
| Senior data scientist or ML engineer, lead | about €84,000 to €130,000 |
Our salary report shows lower figures for the same roles. That is because the report excludes holiday allowance and averages several sources. Compare like with like when you set your band.
Recruiting from abroad? Ask your adviser about the 30 percent ruling. It is a Dutch tax facility for employees recruited from outside the Netherlands. Conditions apply, including a minimum salary and having lived far enough from the Dutch border before the job. The rules have changed in recent years, so check the current conditions with the Dutch Tax Administration or a tax adviser before you use it in an offer.
What our own AI hiring data shows
In 2026 we worked on ten roles in AI and machine learning, from AI software engineer to AI lead, and made 34 introductions. For ten candidates the process ended with a known reason. That reason sat just as often with the candidate as with the employer.
Candidates dropped out because the role was different than expected, because there were no experienced AI colleagues in the team, because of four office days a week, because they accepted an earlier offer elsewhere, or because the salary was not clear in time. Employers turned candidates down for too little experience, a stack that did not match and travel distance, and one employer stopped the vacancy. Five more introductions lapsed because the employer did not respond for more than sixty days.
What that means for choosing an agency:
- AI engineers choose on the team. An agency should help you tell that story honestly, also when you are hiring your first AI engineer.
- Speed wins. An agency that guards your process is worth more than one with more CVs.
- Clarity up front saves drop-outs. Salary, office days and what the role really is belong in the first conversation.
Questions to ask an AI engineer recruitment agency
- Which AI roles did you fill in the past year, and for what kind of companies? Look for concrete examples, not logos.
- What is the difference between an AI engineer and an ML engineer for my role? The answer shows whether the agency understands the work.
- How do you check that someone has put something into production?
- Which salary band is realistic for my role, and what is it based on? Ask whether it includes holiday allowance.
- Where are the people you will approach? For AI engineers, not on job boards.
- Do you speak to every candidate yourself, and what is in a candidate profile?
- What do you tell candidates about us, and what is weak in our story?
- How does the fee work, which salary is it based on, and what happens if the hire leaves early?
- Who does the work? The person you are talking to, or someone you never meet?

For several roles, Recruitment as a Service starts at €2,500 per month for two vacancies at a time, minimum 3 months. Details are on our rates page (in Dutch), and the agency or in-house calculator helps you compare.
We have recruited only software and AI engineers for 8 years and have a network of 25,000+ engineers. We only fill permanent roles, no freelance or secondment. After the intake you get a first matching candidate within 5 working days. You only see candidates we have spoken to ourselves, with a candidate profile.
